Change In Narrative

Change In Narrative

When looking at the first draft of our storyboard, we decided that the plot was lacking a strong narrative. The lack of a powerful narrative was due to us changing some key elements of our plot without thinking of the bigger picture. This meant the idea did not flow as we had intended and it lost its impact. The trailer had become a big montage of over-dramatic shots which lost the edge of social realism that we were going for. To fix this problem, we began exploring other concepts of narrative to incorporate into our basic plot line.

During our discussion we became intrigued with the idea of having our main character battle with an internal conflict. At first we considered a mental health issue such as schizophrenia, but this is a topic that has already been covered a lot and we wanted to focus on something different. We finally came to the idea of exploring sexuality and having the main character coming to terms with the fact that he is gay.

To help us enhance the portrayal of sexuality in the narrative we looked into existing films on this topic. The trailer for 'Call Me By Your Name' heavily inspired us to finalise our narrative by having our main character fall in love with a man and question his own sexuality. We liked how their 'love' is very subtly portrayed throughout most of the trailer and it is only at the end that it is really shown. We wanted to keep our social realism edge so we decided to combine it with the genre of romance. This should in turn help to broaden the target audience and interest a wider range of people.

We have decided to set the time period as modern day due to time restrictions on creating an authentic previous decade.
